RESEARCH TO WRITING

For those of you who missed today's class.

Please note that we were working on our use of the text, researching character and developing our understanding of how the character presents on the page.

The Homework for Thursday is:
a) Gwendolen's diary entry exam paper issued last Thursday.
b) create a graph for one character in the play which charts their journey from when they appear to the end of the play. On the graph you should identify key points in the narrative for the character which impact on their status, happiness, success (in love for example). It need not be complicated, but the process will help you understand the character's journey better.

Nov 3rd Essay

Here is the passage to annotate and turn into some clear analytical writing.

I am looking to see you deelop your writing skills and show me that you have knowledge and understanding of how to explore the meaning within language - you began the course in September doing this when we looked at the title of the play.

the sections to break your essay down into.
  • Language and literary analysis - how Wilde uses lexis, topic, syntax, grammar, rhetorical and literary devices to reveal the characters and their attitudes.
  • How Wilde exposes the hypocrisies of Victorian society through the use of inversion. In other words how by having his characters say things which appear opposite to what is expected he is able to comment on the society he lived in and observed. (roles of men and women, education, vanity etc.)
  • How and why the two sections above may lead to humour - irony, satire and sarcasm.
In total your essay should be about 1000 words.

Please make sure that you have completed the work ASAP.

Monday 31st OCTOBER

Lesson 3

LO: To develop word level analysis of text.

Pick two or three quotations from Act 1 and the same number from Act 2 and analyse closely.

Ensure that in your analysis you address the following in detail.

  • language (lexis, grammar, syntax, punctuation, word class, tenses etc.)
  • literary devices (metaphor, simile, alliteration, assonance, rhyme, rhythm etc.)
  • how humour is created (irony, inversions, puns and plays on words/phrases/proverbs, satirical comment, situation etc.)
Write these up directly onto the blog PLEASE and complete by Thursday.

NB. You could quite easily write a side on one quotation if you look at it closely though I am expecting about half a side of detailed work in each quotation. I am interested NOT in how well you waffle BUT in how well you dissect language.

Example: See the work we did on "All women become like their mothers. ..." Grammatically inaccurate use of punctuation but very specifically chosen for effect. Declarative style which both reinforces the prejudices of the character and is pitched to elicit laughs. etc.

Work should be completed in C1.

ESSAY

Apologies for the delay in posting.

The general thrust of the essay title is to explore the similarities and differences between Algy and Cecily with particular reference to their language, imagination and use of inversions.

Tip: don't expect them to be the same, rather spend time analysing what they say and do and how this generates humour.

Remember: start with word level and expand out to wider discussions.

Complete the quiz on Importance

NO CONFERRING.

Reading

Paired reading of Act two opening.

Q. How are the characters, attitudes and prejudices of Cecily, Miss Prism and Dr Chasuble are established during the opening of Act 2?

Write with specific reference to the text, using word level analysis where appropriate. Focus on differences in lexis, sentence structure and tone amongst other features.

Notice the way in which Miss Prism changes when Dr Chasuble arrives. How is this shown through her language and why does this change take place?

PREP FOR TOMORROW

As this is being posted so late, I will not load you with additional worries.

Tomorrow will simply be a written test on a specific passage from the text followed by a short creative writing task in the style of Wilde.

As mentioned before your best revision is to read and re-read.

In addition I have acquired personal logins for an AS Lang/Lit study book for us to use. I will be giving you each access codes and details about it tomorrow so please remind me.

TODAY

Ladies and Gent

My profuse apologies for not being with you this afternoon, I'm sure that your made good use of the time to read and re-read the text, discuss Wilde's literary style and linguistic techniques and enjoy the sunshine.

We will be back in the swing of things on Monday as usual so keep an eye on the blog over the weekend as next week is 6th form Assessment week and there will be a formal assessed task to prepare for which will generate my first current working level and predicted target grade for this unit.

The best way to prepare for this will be to go back over what you have done, read through the materials available online on the AQA website and READ THE PLAY.

MONDAY 19TH LESSON

Integrated Analysis and Text Production

Here is today's lesson. I realise that we didn't cover everything in the presentation but we did cover enough for you to continue with the analysis as part of your home learning.

My expectation from you is that you will do this every lesson and not let the good work you do in class simply remain dormant in an exercise book un reviewed until the next lesson.

Please make an effort to update your blog with the notes from the lesson and get in the habit of doing this regularly.

A REMINDER THAT THE SCENES NEED TO BE WRITTEN FOR THURSDAY AND YOU MUST HAVE A COPY OF THE TEXT BY THEN - NO EXCUSE ACCEPTED

HOME LEARNING

DUE - Next lesson

Following on from the work we did today, I would like you to write an analysis of the title, cast list and opening page of dialogue from Act 1 Scene 1 of 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.

In your analysis, which I hope and expect to be posted on your blog (either embedded as a document or a simple post) I would like you to consider the following.

How does Wilde explores status through his use of language?

My expectation is that your essay will be between 450 and 550 words and this should take about an hour. In the remaining time I expect you to read the play and I hope that you find it funny...if not you know what Wilde would think of you!

You will be engage with detailed examination of the literary texts we are looking at from two perspectives which are linked and yet also descrete. You will have to get to grips with some new and challenging language terminology. You will have to read widely and in depth and be prepared to work both verbally and on paper.

You will also need to set up and maintain a BLOG like this one and today's lesson is about guiding you through that process.

The video and document below should help you through this process.

A COUPLE OF RULES
  • Don't mention your full name
  • title your blog (first name) AS LangLit and URL: (firstname)aslanglit.blogspot.com
  • Don't post photos of yourself
  • Don't use this for any work other than English
