Monday 31st OCTOBER

Lesson 3

LO: To develop word level analysis of text.

Pick two or three quotations from Act 1 and the same number from Act 2 and analyse closely.

Ensure that in your analysis you address the following in detail.

  • language (lexis, grammar, syntax, punctuation, word class, tenses etc.)
  • literary devices (metaphor, simile, alliteration, assonance, rhyme, rhythm etc.)
  • how humour is created (irony, inversions, puns and plays on words/phrases/proverbs, satirical comment, situation etc.)
Write these up directly onto the blog PLEASE and complete by Thursday.

NB. You could quite easily write a side on one quotation if you look at it closely though I am expecting about half a side of detailed work in each quotation. I am interested NOT in how well you waffle BUT in how well you dissect language.

Example: See the work we did on "All women become like their mothers. ..." Grammatically inaccurate use of punctuation but very specifically chosen for effect. Declarative style which both reinforces the prejudices of the character and is pitched to elicit laughs. etc.

Work should be completed in C1.

ESSAY

Apologies for the delay in posting.

The general thrust of the essay title is to explore the similarities and differences between Algy and Cecily with particular reference to their language, imagination and use of inversions.

Tip: don't expect them to be the same, rather spend time analysing what they say and do and how this generates humour.

Remember: start with word level and expand out to wider discussions.

Reading

Paired reading of Act two opening.

Q. How are the characters, attitudes and prejudices of Cecily, Miss Prism and Dr Chasuble are established during the opening of Act 2?

Write with specific reference to the text, using word level analysis where appropriate. Focus on differences in lexis, sentence structure and tone amongst other features.

Notice the way in which Miss Prism changes when Dr Chasuble arrives. How is this shown through her language and why does this change take place?

PREP FOR TOMORROW

As this is being posted so late, I will not load you with additional worries.

Tomorrow will simply be a written test on a specific passage from the text followed by a short creative writing task in the style of Wilde.

As mentioned before your best revision is to read and re-read.

In addition I have acquired personal logins for an AS Lang/Lit study book for us to use. I will be giving you each access codes and details about it tomorrow so please remind me.
